VAN ZANDT COUNTY HERITAGE & ATTRACTIONS

VAN ZANDT COUNTY EAST TEXAS

Established in 1848 and named for Republic of Texas leader Isaac Van Zandt, the county maintains its agricultural heritage while embracing controlled growth. With a population of approximately 60,000, Van Zandt County offers a balance of rural character and modern conveniences.

FRUITVALE TEXAS

Fruitvale (population 424) draws its name from its historic location in the fruit-growing district of the Sabine River valley. The town's origins date to the Missouri Pacific Railroad era when it served as Bolen Switch, renamed around 1901 after local fruit growers petitioned for the change. Today, Fruitvale maintains its small-town character while benefiting from proximity to larger communities.

CANTON FIRST MONDAY TRADE DAYS

The world's largest flea market spans over 400 acres with more than 5,000 vendors and 700,000 square feet of covered shopping, attracting upwards of 100,000 visitors each month. Operating since the 1850s, this historic market began when circuit judges held court on the first Monday of each month, drawing crowds for legal proceedings and horse trading.

The market operates Thursday through Sunday before each first Monday, year-round, creating consistent economic activity and entertainment options just minutes from your property. This proximity adds value for potential cabin rentals or RV sites, as Trade Days visitors often seek nearby accommodations.

WORLD-CLASS FISHING

Lake Fork

Recognized as one of the country's top trophy bass lakes, Lake Fork's combination of restrictive harvest regulations, Florida strain largemouth stocking, and abundant habitat has created a well-known fishery. The lake has produced 33 of Texas's 50 largest documented bass, including multiple fish exceeding 17 pounds. Beyond bass, Lake Fork offers good crappie, catfish, and sunfish populations.

Lake Tawakoni

This 37,879-acre reservoir is known as the "Catfish Capital of Texas," featuring strong populations of channel and blue catfish, along with trophy striped bass, hybrid stripers, and white bass. Lake Tawakoni State Park provides 376 acres with boat ramps, camping, hiking trails, and a swimming beach.
